Random Thoughts

And after the night’s shoot and dinner, it was back in the classroom for Movie & Crit. Our Cape Cod event is our 25th event so we had cake of course. We want to thank EVERY DLWS participant over the years who has come and made it possible for the DLWS staff partake in their #2 passion, sharing photography. Our #1 passion is of course, photography itself!

THANKS!

What a great group of folks! They have so much energy and desire to shoot, I’m not getting much shooting in and no time to blog what I have shot. This is a photo from this morning’s sunrise shoot at Cadillac Mtn. It was gorgeous, it was cold and it was windy. What a great morning!

You can see more images from our ME DLWS event and Laurie’s blog, Josh’s Blog and Kevin’s new blog. They’re having to pick up my slack!

This has been one heck of a day! We’re in Bar Harbor ME for our current DLWS event (1st of 2 in two weeks). We have just a great, great group of folks who are just working us too death as they pursue their photographic goals. Some great images were made today focusing on Jordan Pond (seen above) and at Bass Harbor.

The magic of the fall color grabbed my attentions. The top image is a simple down the shore photo taken with a 200VR. I came in closer on the fall color with the middle photo which are leaves under water, about three inches. The varying degree of sharpness I could see with my eyes kinda reminded me of the effect of the Lens Baby. This photo was captured with the 105VR. Finally, I came in close on one fall leaf and the drop of rain that had collected at its tip. This image was also taken with the 105VR. The color gets more and more intense each day we’re hear. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

We’ve just posted dates for our upcoming Redwoods DLWS event. This is one the the staff’s favorites and in fact, we’re heading back again this spring just because the staff wants to shoot there (probably to give the new 14-24AFS on the D3 a real test on a TALL subjects). Our last visit it rained the entire, bloody time. No, it didn’t rain, it poured! Despite that, the photography was so grand there wasn’t one person who missed one shoot and in fact, some had to be pried away from the giants to do dry off. While we’re hoping to avoid the rain, we won’t be avoiding the great photography.

We’re currently in Bar Harbor ME for our upcoming DLWS event which starts on Sunday. We than venture down to Cape Cod where are ~very~ special guest (and bud) Scott Kelby will help us celebrate our 25th DLWS event. After that, we’ll be posting the dates for our fall 2008 two remaining events. Looking forward to sharing our pixel passion with you this coming year!

We’re in DC, getting ready for the start of the PPP tour this week. We played tourist today cruising “The Mall.” We enjoy the Mall and all the history that it contains. After hitting the Museum of Natural History and the Nat’l Archives, we headed up to Ford’s Theater. It was closed but the Peterson House (where Lincoln died) across the street was open. After going through it, we just wondered around downtown where we came across this building.

At first, it was the late afternoon light reflected off the building behind us onto this old thing that caught my attention. Than I noticed that the entire first floor was gone! What you see under the orange girders is the building behind the building in the photo! The entire first floor has been removed as they restore and rebuild this beautiful old building. As I stood there very excitedly photographing this, the locals walked by giving me very strange looks. I felt I should have a sign on my back, “I’m from the mountains” to explain my excitement. One window had the construction company’s logo which I removed using the technique Scott Kelby demos on PhotoshopUserTV 100th episode. Can you tell which window?

Endangered Species Coalition

Act now to stop hundreds of wolves from being slaughtered!

The Bush Administration is planning to kill hundreds of endangered wolves in the Northern Rockies. We need your help to save wolves from these disastrous policies.

The recovery of the gray wolf in the northern Rockies is one of the great Endangered Species Act success stories and an unparalleled feat of ecological restoration. The biologists, conservationists and wildlife managers can celebrate an amazing return of the wolf from the brink of extinction. Last year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took the first step toward the eventual removal of Endangered Species Act safeguards, which would leave protection entirely up to the states.

Unfortunately, the Bush Administration wants to turn back the clock on wolf restoration by proposing a new rule that will allow states to kill hundreds of wolves,

even while wolves still remain under the protection of the Endangered Species Act. In fact, Idaho and Wyoming have already announced plans to “manage wolves down to minimum levels and are likely to use this new rule to begin doing so.

Please tell the US Fish and Wildlife Service to reject the plan to weaken wolf management rules under the Endangered Species Act.

Thanks for speaking up for wildlife! For more information, please visit the Endangered Species Coalition at: http://www.stopextinction.org/wolves

Sincerely,

Derek Goldman

Here lies Russell Brown, he’ll never take me to the Roadkill Cafe again!

There we were, standing in the valet parking at the Luxor, minding our own business when I was kidnapped by a mad doctor (pictured here)! Sharon is still safe & sound at the Luxor, I on the other hand have been driven to Seligman, AZ. Where the hell is Seligman, AZ? I’m being treated very well, had a great steak at the Roadkill Cafe but I’ve been told I have to be ready to go at 5AM. I was told I won’t be able to talk to the world until the 5th. Wish me luck, I’m in the hands a crazed mind!
