Great Stuff

We have an opening in our upcoming South Dakota Wildlife Photographers Base Camp (must be tax time). We also have a couple of openings in our June, Alaska Base Camp. “Just what is Base Camp?” We get asked that alot. We’ve updated our Base Camp webpage that hopefully will answer that question better. All the photos on that page were taken during the last two Base Camps in MT & FL. If that isn’t enough, here’s a couple of love notes from past Campers.

From MT Base Camp:
Moose,

I spent Saturday at the Pelican Island NWR Festival in Sebastian, Florida where I won Best in Show plus 2nd place in Birds and Wildlife (Landscape was the other category) in the Photo Contest. Photo was taken with a D3 and 200-400mm f4.

I have only entered a few photo contests. This was my first “win”. The competition was quite good, so I am excited.

Thanks for your help - even the tennis balls.

From FL Base Camp:
Moose,

I just wanted to drop you a note to say thanks for a great week. You and Josh went over and beyond my expectations by far. You gave us a lot of great tools and so much information that the learning goes on as things continue to “click” even after the event’s end. That sort of learning rather than simple regurgitation of a string of facts is invaluable.

Base Camp solidified the foundation of my photography and gave me a barometer to measure future efforts. There wasn’t a waisted moment and the hard work was far from a vacation, but the education was priceless.

I hope to join you again soon.

Best,
Jim Poor

Come shoot and learn with Josh, Sharon & I, you owe it to your photography!

My good friends at Crown Camera just called and said they have FIVE D3s in stock, just came in. Not only that, but if you call them and tell ‘em I sent you, they’ll knock $200 off the price. Here’s their number 800-655-4256, ask for Frank.

PS…I’ve been asked a few times lately about the new 24PC-E lens. I have one, shot a couple of panos, been playing with it and will have a posting all about it and its use by this weekend. I can tell you, it’s one sharp puppy!

Yes, vol 12.3 of the BT Journal is in the mail and, and it’s a 36pg Special Edition. Only available to BT Journal subscribers, the Special Edition features a HUGE piece on Yellowstone winter photography, piece on Spit Shine that Pixel and a feature by our own Josh Bradley. This issue will never be sent out as a sample, so if you want it, you’ve gotta belly up to the bar. You can get a sneak preview here if there are any doubts you should own a copy.

I’ve been very fortunate in my career in many, many ways, one is the friends I’ve made amongst those I hold in the highest regard. Becoming friends with Joe McNally and Joel Satore has brought many rewards. I’ve always, always respected and feel very fortunate to be able to call the great photographer Jay Maisel friend and with whom I’ve had some very colorful conversations with to say the least.

Another photographer who I deeply admire and who I’ve had very meaningful conversations with is John Paul Caponigro. Our conversations aren’t about f/stop or printers (though I’ve learned all I know about printing and paper from JP), but rather life and the environment. JP being a very insightful and forward thinker has recorded and published many conversations he has had with the great visual communicators of our time. I’m quite honored that JP has included me in that group. You can read the Moose installment here. I hope you enjoy.

Our last shoot of the Moab 2008 DLWS event found us back at Cisco. It is truly a treasure chest made up of old junk just crying to be photographed. The “Thelma & Louis” car was quite a popular prop for folks. Few found this cool, old, rusty coke machine and lastly is my favorite, Sharon looking out through that killer homemade screen door at sunset.
