Great Outdoors

The “blizzard” settled in over our heads during the night. We can’t get out (to pick up Josh) and he can’t get in (flights canceled until tomorrow). So naturally, I took a drive and found some subjects which seemed to just get better and better.

And then I drove up memory lane to a line shack I’ve always liked but never got a good photo of until this morning.

The photography side was pretty simple. I underexposed -1/2 stop knowing what would happen when I dropped a black point / white point in NX. Then just to punch them up a tad, I used Nik Color Efex 3.0 Tonal Contrast. Now, we’re heading back out again to give the road crews more panic seeing us driving on the roads.

As the sun was getting ready to set, we were driving back from dinner and there was spring! This grand old Valley Oak has been a favorite of mine for decades, photographed it many times over the years. Tonight, it just had that look of spring with the new greens popping out unlike just a couple of days ago. So, parked the truck and off I ran.

I finally found some green in the Central Valley and then what do I go and do….

yeap, I like it better as a B&W! Go figure. I guess the rash slowly growing up my leg and driving me nuts is what I get for thinking B&W for a spring image (and wearing short pants running through a field).

Our last shoot of the Moab 2008 DLWS event found us back at Cisco. It is truly a treasure chest made up of old junk just crying to be photographed. The “Thelma & Louis” car was quite a popular prop for folks. Few found this cool, old, rusty coke machine and lastly is my favorite, Sharon looking out through that killer homemade screen door at sunset.

Up early and WOW! Mesa Arch just glows!

It’s very rewarding to receive emails from folks who not only enjoy the images here, but back engineer how it was taken and use that info for their own photography. Yes, this is the combination of two images, one for the highlight detail and one for the shadow detail. They are merged in Photoshop and then finished with Tonal Contrast Nik Colerefex 3.0 filter.

Ok…now that I’m back with it (posting at midnight doesn’t always work well), these are images from Cisco landing where we ventured to again. It just wasn’t my night, so I highly recommend you heading to Josh’s blog who had a great evening, Kevin’s blog and Laurie’s. And if you’re bored, there’s always Joe’s blog. Actually, I’m still in shock that Joe came back late last night, processed an image from the shoot, got it up along with text in his blog. Did you feel the earth stop, I sure did!
